The Income Tax Return filing season brings different forms for different taxpayer categories, and ITR-2 is one of the most commonly used forms for individual and HUF taxpayers with specific income sources. As Assessment Year 2026-27 approaches, understanding whether you need to file ITR-2 and the associated deadlines is essential for staying compliant.

Who Should File ITR-2

ITR-2 is designated for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who have income from sources other than business or profession. You must file ITR-2 if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Individuals or HUFs with income from capital gains (both short-term and long-term)
  • Taxpayers owning more than one house property
  • Those with income from foreign assets or foreign income
  • Directors in companies
  • Individuals with income exceeding Rs 50 lakh
  • Those holding unlisted equity shares at any time during the financial year
  • Individuals with agricultural income exceeding Rs 5,000

Notably, salaried individuals without capital gains or multiple properties can use the simpler ITR-1 (Sahaj) form. However, if you have made profits from selling stocks, mutual funds, property, or other capital assets during Financial Year 2025-26, ITR-2 becomes mandatory.

Last Date for Filing ITR-2 for AY 2026-27

For Assessment Year 2026-27 (corresponding to Financial Year 2025-26), the standard deadline for filing ITR-2 is July 31, 2026, for most individual taxpayers. However, certain extensions may apply:

For individuals requiring audit, the deadline typically extends to October 31, 2026. The Income Tax Department occasionally announces deadline extensions, so monitoring official notifications is advisable.

Missing the deadline attracts late filing fees under Section 234F - up to Rs 5,000 for those with total income exceeding Rs 5 lakh, and up to Rs 1,000 for others. Additionally, interest under Sections 234A, 234B, and 234C may apply on any tax dues.

Documents Required for ITR-2 Filing

Before beginning the filing process, gather these essential documents:

  • Form 16 from employer (if applicable)
  • Bank statements showing interest income
  • Capital gains statements from brokers or mutual fund houses
  • Property details and rental income records
  • Form 26AS (Annual Tax Statement)
  • AIS (Annual Information Statement)
  • TDS certificates for any other income
  • Details of advance tax and self-assessment tax paid
  • Foreign asset and income details (if applicable)

How to File ITR-2 Online

The Income Tax Department's e-filing portal provides a streamlined process for filing ITR-2. Here's the step-by-step procedure:

First, log in to the official e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in using your PAN as user ID. Navigate to the 'e-File' menu and select 'Income Tax Return.'

Choose Assessment Year 2026-27, select 'ITR-2' as your return form, and pick the appropriate filing mode - either 'Online' (recommended) or 'Offline.'

For online filing, the portal provides a user-friendly interface where you enter details across various sections:

Start with personal information and verify it matches your PAN details. The system auto-populates much of this data.

Move to the income details section, where you'll report salary income, house property income, capital gains, and other sources. The portal now pre-fills information from Form 26AS and AIS, but you must verify and add any missing details.

Reporting Capital Gains Correctly

Capital gains reporting requires special attention in ITR-2. You must segregate short-term and long-term gains, applying different tax rates. Short-term capital gains on equity (held less than 12 months) attract 15% tax, while long-term gains exceeding Rs 1.25 lakh are taxed at 12.5% for equity investments.

For property sales, calculate gains after claiming indexed cost of acquisition and improvement costs. Section 54 deductions for reinvestment in residential property can significantly reduce tax liability.

Claiming Deductions and Tax Payments

After reporting all income, claim eligible deductions under Chapter VI-A, including Section 80C (up to Rs 1.5 lakh), 80D (health insurance), and others.

Enter details of taxes already paid - TDS, advance tax, and self-assessment tax. The portal calculates your final tax liability or refund due.

Verification and Submission

After reviewing all entries, validate the return. The system flags errors for correction. Once validated, submit the return and verify it within 30 days using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by sending a signed ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Centre.
