Filing your income tax return (ITR) might give you a sense of accomplishment, but the process isn't complete until you verify it. Many taxpayers are unaware that simply submitting their return online doesn't constitute a valid filing in the eyes of the Income Tax Department. E-verification is the mandatory final step that validates your submission.
Why E-Verification Is Mandatory
When you file your ITR online through the income tax portal, the return remains in a pending status until verified. Without verification, the Income Tax Department does not process your return, which means you won't receive any refund due to you, and the return will be considered invalid. This can lead to penalties and interest for non-filing, even though you technically submitted the return.
The 30-day deadline is critical because if you fail to verify within this window, your ITR filing becomes null and void. You would then need to file a belated return, which comes with its own set of complications and potential penalties under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act.
Consequences of Missing the Verification Deadline
If you miss the 30-day verification window, several adverse consequences follow. Your return filing will be treated as non-filed, making you liable for late filing penalties. The penalty can be up to Rs 5,000, or Rs 1,000 if your total income is below Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, any tax refund you were expecting will be delayed indefinitely until you file and verify a new return.
Moreover, non-verification can complicate your tax compliance history, potentially triggering scrutiny in future assessments. Your Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS) will show TDS deducted but no return filed, creating discrepancies in tax records.
Six Methods to E-Verify Your ITR
The Income Tax Department provides multiple convenient options for verification, ensuring accessibility for all taxpayers.
Aadhaar OTP Method
This is the quickest and most popular method. If your Aadhaar is linked with your PAN and the mobile number registered with UIDAI is active, you can complete verification instantly. Simply log into the income tax portal, navigate to the pending ITR, and select the Aadhaar OTP option. Enter the six-digit OTP received on your registered mobile number, and your return is verified immediately.
Net Banking Verification
Many banks offer ITR verification through their net banking portals. After logging into your net banking account, look for the e-filing section or tax services. Select your pending ITR and authenticate using your bank credentials. This method provides instant verification and is particularly useful if you prefer not to share your Aadhaar OTP.
Bank Account Validation
This newer method uses Electronic Verification Code (EVC) generated through pre-validated bank accounts. Your bank account must be pre-validated on the income tax portal. Once validated, you can generate an EVC and use it to verify your return without requiring an OTP each time.
Demat Account Verification
Taxpayers holding demat accounts can use them for verification. The demat account must be pre-validated on the e-filing portal. Once validated, you generate an EVC through your depository participant's portal and use it for verification.
ATM Method
You can generate an EVC through ATMs of participating banks. Visit an ATM, select the income tax e-filing option, authenticate using your PIN, and generate an EVC. Use this code on the income tax portal to complete verification within 72 hours of generation.
Physical Verification (ITR-V)
If you cannot use electronic methods, the physical route remains available. Download the ITR-V acknowledgement from the portal, sign it, and send it to the Centralized Processing Center in Bengaluru via ordinary or speed post. The address is printed on the ITR-V itself. This method takes longer as the document must reach within 30 days from the filing date.
Step-by-Step E-Verification Process
Log into the income tax e-filing portal using your credentials. Navigate to the 'e-Verify Return' option under the e-File menu. Select the assessment year and acknowledgement number of your pending return. Choose your preferred verification method from the available options. Complete the authentication process as per your selected method. Once verified, you'll receive a confirmation message on your registered email and mobile number.
Track Your Verification Status
After verification, check your status by logging into the portal and viewing your filed returns. The status should change from 'Pending Verification' to 'Verified.' You'll also receive email confirmation with your ITR-V acknowledgement. Processing of your return typically begins within a few days of successful verification.
